A wholesale distributor and retailer in Colorado, Becker Safety and Supply started with just a truck and a trailer back in 1999. Their reputation as an expert source of safety and supply products grew increasingly over the years and massive growth in the western USA oil and gas industry drove business and walk-in customers directly to Becker’s store to buy and pickup critical supplies. Additionally, more and more business owners looked to outfit their entire crews with the best value protective equipment and clothing possible. A physical location provided the immediate availability and also the “touch and feel” and in-person product knowledge. This continues to set Becker apart from online competition, general hardware stores and consumer-oriented footwear retailers.
Fast-forward to today, Becker now boasts a large warehouse, corporate offices and an adjacent full-service B2B and B2C retail storefront along with mobile store and onsite response trailers. The demands of a complex and growing omnichannel operation could not be met with the software solutions that had been in place. Becker suffered constantly with inconsistent data in its QuickBooks accounting and POS, Fishbowl inventory and InfusionSoft CRM systems. They needed to upgrade to streamline operations and chose NetSuite as their cloud ERP and commerce solution. NetSuite would provide the “one system of truth” and functions necessary to consolidate operations and scale.
The implementation of NetSuite was successful. Inventory management was running smoothly with the real-time capabilities necessary to optimize warehousing. Financials, CRM, eCommerce, marketing, reporting and virtually all aspects of their operations had all been tied together on the single NetSuite platform. The one piece that was not up to speed was Becker’s in-store checkout.
Becker had initially chosen a lower-cost POS with checkout hosted directly within NetSuite. “It made sense on paper to have our checkout embedded in the NetSuite transaction forms,” said Devin Becker, Vice President. “However, it was too slow and complex. The hardware and payment processing glitched a lot and frustrated our clerks and shoppers.”
Becker Safety and Supply, whose hybrid brick-and-mortar model, expert staff, and superior product mix separated them from the pack, was struggling to deliver an in-store experience that could keep up. Their back-office was running great on NetSuite, but something had to be done at the point of sale.
“We looked at NetSuite SuiteCommerce In-Store (SCIS) and a couple of other options,” Becker shared. “After a lot of due diligence, we chose SuiteRetail and SuitePOS because it was high-performing, simple to use and native to NetSuite.”SuitePOS was implemented in less than a month. On day-one of go live, they started using the solution at the annual Safety and Expo show, a critical event that went very well with SuitePOS in place.
